St. Marguerite students preserve Hamilton shoreline

Grade 3 students from St. Marguerite d'Youville Catholic Elementary School were at Hamilton Beach on June 15 to help Environment Hamilton and the Hamilton Naturalists' Club, working in partnership with the City of Hamilton and the Hamilton Conservation Authority, to revegetate the dunes along the beach in order to create a natural barrier to erosion.

High water levels in Lake Ontario this spring having taken a toll on Hamilton’s beachfront, causing the shoreline to recede. The students have been part of a shoreline restoration project to plant marram grass, a fast-growing and “favoured species for stabilizing sand dunes and preventing erosion.”
