Creative kids design creative ads for annual Spectator contest

“It takes a lot of work to create an ad,” said Reyna, a St. Eugene Catholic Elementary School student.

Reyna’s Grade 7 class participated in The Hamilton Spectator’s annual Creative Kids Design-an-Ad Contest, a program run in partnership with Classroom Connection to teach students about print advertising.

After a series of curriculum-based lessons about print advertising, students used what they learned in the classroom to design, create, and submit an advertisement for a select local business.

Reyna’s class designed for Saltfleet Stoney Creek Soccer. The top three designs were posted online, where readers were invited to vote for their favourite. Reyna won for Best Creative.

Several other HWCDSB schools participated in the contest, producing ads for a variety of businesses including eye care, car dealerships, education providers, and hardware.

The experience has changed how participating students now look at ads. An effective ad needs good visuals, decided Grade 7 Sts. Peter and Paul student, Nino.

“25% of the ad should be white,” said Jacob, a sixth grader from St. Matthew Catholic Elementary School, while Sofia, a Grade 7 from Sts. Peter and Paul said eye-catching colour and images made for a good ad.

For classmates Lacie, Ericka, Natalia and Mariana from Sts. Peter and Paul, the real challenge was drawing a car. Their client was Hamilton Volkswagen. They earned an A+ for their effort.

For Rylee, a Grade 6 student at St. Matthew, the learning turned out to be threefold: learning how to design an ad, learning about the business, and learning about the product.

Rylee, who designed for Three Sisters Gardens at Mohawk College, was surprised to learn that three plants are grown together instead of in rows.

Winning designs for Best Creative were published in a special advertising feature in the May 5th edition of The Hamilton Spectator.
